PYCO Orchestra - Audition Requirements
Strings
  • Two scales in a major key in two or three octaves (up to 5 sharps & 5 flats). One harmonic minor scale. Carl Flesch scale system fingering recomended.
  • Any solo of your choice from the standard repertoire (concerto, sonata, etude or orchestral excerpt) demonstrating best technical and musical abilities.
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)
Woodwinds
  • 2 prepared contrasting pieces
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)
Brass
  • 2 prepared contrasting pieces
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)
Percussion
  • Prepare a snare, mallet and timpani solo of your choice from the standard repertoire, demonstrating technical and musical abilities.
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)
Piano/Keyboard
  • Three (3) solo works of your choice (concerto, sonata, etude or orchestral excerpt), each one no more than 5 minutes in duration. One solo should be from the Baroque period and the other from the Classical period.
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)
Harp
  • Any solo of your choice from the standard repertoire (concerto, sonata, etude or orchestral excerpt) demonstrating technical and musical abilities.
  • Sight reading (provided at the audition)

Jr. Strings - Audition Requirements
  • Two scales in one or two octaves that display student's best abilities.
  • One solo piece or étude that displays student's best abilities. Sight-reading may be required at the audition.

Chamber Strings - Audition Requirements
  • Two scales in two or three octaves that best display student's abilities. It is recomended that students choose scales that include shifting and extended fingers.
  • One solo piece or étude that displays student's best abilities. Sight-reading may be required at the audition.

Jr. Wind Ensemble - Audition Requirements
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium & Tuba
  • 1 prepared fast solos or song
  • 1 prepared slow solos or song
  • 2 scales
Percussion
  • 1 or 2 prepared solos on Snare Drum and/or Xylophone/Bells (ideally, 1 solo for each instrument)
  • Demonstrate basic rudiments, ie: rolls, flams
  • 1 or 2 scales on xylophone
  • Possible sight reading
  • Optional: a short piano piece, if student plays piano
